Georgia is one of the few US states not to have any regulated sports betting. The state’s biggest problem is that it has no casinos, either. Any new sports betting regulation would likely have to include brick ‘n mortar casinos too. That means new laws are unlikely any time soon.

Governor hopeful, Stacey Abrams, is keen on casinos and sports betting in Georgia. Abrams will have her shot at governor in an election on November 8.

Despite Abrams’ keenness on legalizing betting, the state legislative session ended in July 2022 with no bills being passed. The General Assembly won’t meet again until early next year, so any betting laws are unlikely to be introduced for another year at least.

For now, Georgians must travel across the border to Tennessee to place bets. North Carolina is also close to legalizing sports betting.

Georgia Online Sportsbook Regulation

Georgia gaming facilities are overseen by the Commercial Gambling Unit (CGU), set up in 2013 to enforce the state’s gaming laws. It’s unclear whether a new gaming commission would be set up if Georgia ever legalizes sports betting. Certainly, a new licensing body would be needed to oversee retail sportsbooks and casinos and regulate online operators.
