As all teams are right around the 60 games played mark in the MLB season, we now have a good perspective on who has played well and who has not.
The NL Cy Young race is getting interesting and let’s take a look at the odds by Fanduel.
Favorite
Paul Skenes from the Pittsburgh Pirates is the clear favorite at +120 odds. The question that comes with Skenes though is the quality of the team that he is on can impact his Cy Young chances. Since the award was first presented in 1956, only 16 pitchers have ever won the award pitching on a team with a losing record. The Pirates are currently 22-38 and do not look like they are going to turn things around any time soon. Skenes’ ERA has gone up since last season now at a 2.15 ERA with a 0.92 WHIP. Skenes has started 12 games this year and has a 4-5 record. On paper that does not look great but you have to look at the games he has lost.
Just recently the Pirates were in Philadelphia where Skenes threw his first career complete game where he had only given up 1 run, but got a loss on that game because his offense could not get anything going and got shutout. And before that they played the Cardinals and Skenes gave up 3 hits and 2 earned runs, but yet again the Pirates offense could not get it going and only put up 1 run. What is going to prevent Skenes from winning is not any fault of his, it is just the situation that he is in. Skenes might be someone you might want to stay clear of.
Value Pick
The man whose name is always around the Cy Young award is Zack Wheeler from the Philadelphia Phillies. After being named the runner up to the award last season, Wheeler is looking to finally get his first Cy Young award. He currently has +650 odds and could have some real value. Unlike Skenes, Wheeler is in a much better situation with the batters on the Phillies. In 12 starts this season Zack Wheeler has a 6-2 record with a 2.96 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP. Whenever Wheeler gets on the bump, the Phillies gain such confidence that they know that they are going to get a quality start from him.
This is a career best WHIP for Wheeler right now and has the best winning percentage of his career. Wheeler is going to get stronger and stronger as the season goes on and is going to want to finally win this award because of the type of competitor he is. At +650 odds he is the best value pick in the field because after him there is a steep drop off and the guys that are in front of him have a lot of question marks surrounding them.
Long Shot
A big long shot pick to take a look at is at +3000 odds with Kodai Senga. Senga is on the NL East leading New York Mets and is the number one guy for the Mets. The Mets are the favorite to win the NL East and they are going to need Senga to step up and become a true ace which he very well can be. Through 11 starts this year Senga has a 6-3 record with a 1.60 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP. So Senga’s WHIP is a bit higher than some of the other guys but it is not high enough to where it can be a problem or it can’t be brought down.
The only real number that is much lower than the other guys is his innings pitched. Skenes through 12 games has 76.1 innings pitched, and Wheeler has 76 innings pitched through 12 games. So it is something to take a look at but should not be that much of a concern. With an ERA that low, and with a winning record that good, Kodai Senga could be a really good long shot to put some money on to win big.
Prediction and Thoughts
A big favorite for this award is the ace out of Pittsburgh Paul Skenes. He is the only one on this list to actually have a losing record and I believe that is what is going to be the thing that brings him down. His other numbers speak for themselves but you need to be able to pair those numbers with wins.
A nice value pick is from Philadelphia with Zack Wheeler. Wheeler at +650 odds might be the highest his odds will be all season. Wheeler is a guy who shows up and performs excellent when the season gets closer to the end with the playoff race and his numbers are going to be better and better.
And the long shot to take is the man from New York, Kodai Senga. With the Mets running the NL East and Senga being a big part of that is going to do nothing but help his case. And his numbers are backing that up with having the best ERA in the entire National League.
