AFC South 2024 Betting Preview

Houston Texans came out of nowhere in 2023, and could continue to improve

The Houston Texans were one of the biggest surprises in the NFL last season, going from a perennial bottom-dweller to AFC South champions. Head coach DeMeco Ryans has completely changed the culture in Houston, and the team’s success last year was a testament to his leadership. Quarterback C.J. Stroud, who was excellent as a rookie, returns as the face of the franchise, and his continued development will be key to the Texans’ playoff hopes.

The Texans are no longer a team that will fly under the radar. With their newfound success, they’ll face tougher competition as opponents prepare more rigorously for them. However, Houston is built to compete, boasting a young, talented roster with plenty of upside on both sides of the ball. Their defense, led by Ryans’ defensive expertise, was a top-10 unit last year, and they’ll look to build on that success this season. While it’s never easy to repeat as division champions, Houston has the pieces in place to make another playoff run in 2024.

Indianapolis Colts counting on Richardson to make playoffs

The Indianapolis Colts are one of the more enigmatic teams in the division. Last year, they narrowly missed the playoffs despite a roster that appeared, on paper, to be destined for a rebuilding season. Quarterback Anthony Richardson, who missed most of his rookie year due to injury, is back and ready to take the reins. Richardson remains somewhat of an unknown quantity, but his elite athleticism and strong arm give the Colts a high ceiling if he can develop quickly.

Indianapolis’ fortunes in 2024 will largely hinge on how well Richardson adapts to the speed of the NFL and whether he can stay healthy for the full season. The Colts have a strong supporting cast, including a solid offensive line and playmakers like Jonathan Taylor at running back and Michael Pittman Jr. at wide receiver. If Richardson can take a leap forward in his second year, the Colts could find themselves back in the playoff picture. However, if he struggles, Indianapolis could be in for another frustrating season.

Jacksonville Jaguars should be right in the mix for the title

The Jacksonville Jaguars enter the 2024 season with elevated expectations. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who signed a massive contract extension in the offseason, is now under pressure to deliver and prove he can lead the Jaguars to sustained success. After a promising 2023 season, where Jacksonville made a playoff appearance, the next step is to become a legitimate threat in the postseason.

For that to happen, Lawrence will need to continue his development and improve his consistency, particularly against top-tier defenses. The Jaguars have built a talented roster around him, with weapons like Calvin Ridley, Christian Kirk, and Travis Etienne in the backfield. The defense, while solid, will need to elevate its play to match the offensive firepower if Jacksonville is to make a deep playoff run. Lawrence’s progression will be the key to the Jaguars’ success, and 2024 could be the year they truly break through.

Tennessee Titans might need a few years to rebuild

The Tennessee Titans made some intriguing moves during the offseason, but the quarterback position remains a major question mark. Ryan Tannehill has been serviceable, but he’s aging and inconsistent, while the younger quarterbacks on the roster have yet to prove themselves as viable long-term options. This uncertainty at the most important position could be the Titans’ undoing in an increasingly competitive AFC South.

Despite the concerns at quarterback, Tennessee still has talent on both sides of the ball. Derrick Henry remains one of the best running backs in the league, and he’ll continue to carry the load on offense. However, the Titans’ reliance on Henry and their lack of a dynamic passing game could limit their ceiling in 2024. Unless one of their quarterbacks can step up, Tennessee might be headed for a last-place finish in the division.

Which team should bettors back in AFC South race?

This one is tough, although the Texans made enough moves to probably win the division. But there is some value after watching the other teams perform: we say take Houston.
