Illinois Horse Betting Overview

Illinois is another state with a long history of horse racing that is just hanging on to that heritage following the closure of its marquee racetrack.

Owner Churchill Downs Inc. sold Arlington Park to the Chicago Bears in 2021 with the expectation that the team will tear down the racetrack and build a new stadium on the 326-acre site in suburban Arlington Heights.

Racing has been part of the sporting landscape in the Prairie State since the early 1830s and at one point in the 1930s had six thoroughbred and harness racetracks, more than any other U.S. metropolitan area.

Two remain Hawthorne Park in Stickney, about 12 miles southwest of Chicago, and FanDuel Sportsbook and Horse Racing (formerly Fairmount Park) in Collinsville, about 15 miles northeast of St. Louis.

Hawthorne, which opened in 1891 and has been rebuilt on the site twice after being destroyed by fire, typically races from early April through late March and from early October through late December, though its calendar will expand with the closure of Arlington Park. The track hosts a handful of graded stakes races, most notably the Hawthorne Gold Cup Handicap and the Illinois Derby, both Grade 2s.

Fun fact about horse racing in Illinois

The Arlington Million, the world’s first $1 million thoroughbred race, was run for the first time in 1981. The great John Henry won the inaugural running for trainer Ron McAnally and jockey Bill Shoemaker, all three of whom are enshrined in the National Museum of Horse Racing’s Hall of Fame in Saratoga, N.Y.
