Circa owner Derek Stevens founded Circa Sports and the Circa Resort and Casino in Las Vegas in 2019. After several visits to Las Vegas in the 1980s, he was impressed with the sportsbooks at several resorts in the city and later became interested in operating his own.
Stevens purchased the Golden Gate hotel-casino in 2008 and later Fitzgeralds hotel-casino in 2012, which was renamed The D Las Vegas. At the end of 2015, he had plans to build the Circa Resort, which would finally give him an opportunity to operate a sportsbook.
Once the Supreme Court overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act in May 2018, Stevens filed for a license to open his sportsbook in September of the same year. The Nevada Gaming Commission gave final approval to the project in April 2019. The sportsbook would have many modern technological elements but would operate as a traditional book and cater to all levels of sports bettors.
Circa Sportsbook first opened in June 2019 at the Golden Gate and offered odds and wagers not available at other sportsbooks.
The second Circa Sportsbook was opened a couple of weeks later at The D. It had previously been run by William Hill, with the Las Vegas Golden Knights games being the primary focus of the operation.
Circa Sportsbook entered the online market in July 2020 in Colorado. The Circa Resort would finally be opened later that year in October as the largest sportsbook in the world, according to Stevens, which makes it larger than the SuperBook at Westgate, a 30,000 square foot venue.
