California Online Sportsbooks & Betting Promotions

California could have its first legal online sportsbooks by 2025 if voters have their way. Propositions for the November 2022 midterm election were disappointing, and the result means that the Golden State could vote on the topic next time during the 2024 presidential election voting.

Alternatively, if you happen to be close the Arizona border, there are many good offers available. Other legal betting states include Oregon, Nevada, or Colorado. We do not recommend to use non-US licenses operators.

NOTE: Online sports betting in California is not legal. However, these are five of the biggest sportsbooks that support a CA betting law and who would qualify for a license.

Online Sports Betting in California

California sports betting did not become a reality this time around.

Californians voted overwhelmingly against the two initiatives, Prop 26 and 27, which detailed:

Proposition 26 (Retail Sportsbooks):

  • In-person sports betting at tribal casinos in California
  • Anyone over 21 is permitted to bet
  • Betting on in-state college teams would be prohibited
  • Tribal casinos allowed to offer roulette and craps
  • 15% of proceeds to go toward combating problem gambling

Proposition 27 (Online Sportsbooks):

  • Online sports betting to be legalized outside tribal lands
  • Tribes or gambling companies to be allowed to offer sportsbooks online
  • Gambling companies must partner with a tribe
  • Operators must have licenses in 10 other states or territories
  • Proceeds to go toward combating mental health issues
  • Gamblers aged 21 or over can bet on sports
  • Some funds to go toward a Tribal Economic Development Account

Essentially, retail sports betting in California would be confined to the state’s tribes. Most of California’s 60 tribes favor regulated sports betting of some kind. However, the commercial cardrooms in LA, and some online sportsbooks, are against it.

Some of the country’s biggest sports betting operators supported Proposition 27 passing. These include DraftKings, BetMGM and FanDuel, the big operators who pass the requirement for having five or more existing sports betting licenses.

Sportsbook Regulation in California

The California Gambling Control Commission is responsible for overseeing the state’s wide and varied gaming options. It oversees poker rooms (which are legal in California) and tribal casinos via state compacts. It is likely that online sportsbooks would fall under the control of the CGCC who would issue licenses and ensure operators act properly.
