Sweepstakes casinos grew fast by doing something licensed online casinos cannot: reaching players in states with no legal online gambling. They offer slots and table games, a no deposit bonus of free Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins at sign-up, and promo codes that look like any casino welcome bonus. Legally, though, they are built on promotional sweepstakes law, not gaming licenses.
That model is now under sustained attack. Since mid-2025, lawmakers in at least seven states have passed laws aimed squarely at sweepstakes casinos, and regulators and attorneys general have stepped up enforcement. Our editors have followed those changes closely, so you can see how sweepstakes casino bonuses work, where they are banned and what to check before you sign up.
