IF you had to pick a Dakota to live in based on gambling opportunities alone, then South Dakota would definitely get the vote ahead of its northern counterpart – for the time being at least!
The state saw sports betting made legal in November 2020 with Deadwood the focal point, a city boasting several casinos offering sports betting. However, gamblers wanting to see state-wide online sports betting still have a wait, and while the legislation did allow for mobile betting on the premises of casinos granted sports betting licenses, there appears little appetite to take up the offer and create their own apps.
There is likely to be further moves to legalize state-wide online betting, especially as neighboring states like Iowa and Montana offer that service, and it appears a matter of time before bettors will be able to gamble on the NBA and NFL from the comfort of their own sitting rooms. There is a state lottery, but the only online betting services available are for advance-deposit wagering on horse racing.
Sports betting is legal but it is centred around the tribal casinos of Deadwood, and there is no state-wide online betting available.
South Dakota horse Racing Betting
There is no live horse racing in the state but there are off-course betting facilities. Advance-deposit wagering, offered by the likes of TwinSpires and BetAmerica, is also available in the state allowing bettors to place wagers on their mobile devices or laptops.
There are no online casinos in South Dakota but there are many land-based venues offering a range of table games.
SD Online Poker and Card Rooms
Online poker is outlawed in South Dakota but many of the casinos in the state offer poker rooms. There are many offshore sportsbooks offering online poker that are open to South Dakota residents, but players use them without any consumer protection, leaving them open to the risk of seeing winning bets not paid out.
South Dakota Lottery
The state lottery is open to people aged 18 or over with a number of retail facilities selling tickets. There is no legislation in place for online ticket sales.
South Dakota DFS
The state does not regulate daily fantasy sports events but games run by the likes of FanDuel and DraftKings are open to South Dakota residents.
