Online Sports Betting in South Carolina

It doesn’t look good for South Carolina sportsbooks at the moment. Despite several attempts in 2019 to legalize casinos, no stipulation was made for online sports betting.

That year, SJR 57 and HJR 3409 were introduced as ambitious efforts to regulate casino games and sports betting. Tax on gaming revenue would go toward building new roads in the state. However, both bills died before being seriously considered.

For now, gamblers wanting to bet at sportsbooks need to cross the state border and visit North Carolina casinos such as Harrah’s Cherokee.

Sportsbook Regulation in South Carolina

There is currently no gaming commission that handles betting in South Carolina. The South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) licenses charitable bingo events which help raise funds for good causes. The SCDOR would likely be in charge of regulating legalized sportsbooks unless a special state gaming commission is set up.

A new bill – S 5085 – was introduced in 2022 and proposes legalizing pari-mutuel wagering on horses. While horse racing is permitted in SC, betting on races has traditionally been strictly forbidden.
