No race in Britain draws in as many occasional punters as the Grand National. The 2027 race is at Aintree on Saturday 10 April, with the off at 4pm.

What the Grand National Is: Aintree’s Ultimate Jumping Test
The Randox Grand National is a handicap steeplechase run over about four miles two and a half furlongs at Aintree, near Liverpool. The Jockey Club, which runs the course, describes it as the longest race distance in British jump racing.
The course has 16 fences. Fourteen are jumped twice, and two, The Chair and the Water Jump, only once, which makes 30 jumps in all. The names are part of racing folklore:
- Becher’s Brook (fences 6 and 22), 4ft 10in high, named after Captain Martin Becher, unseated there in the first official Grand National in 1839.
- Foinavon (fences 7 and 23), named after the 1967 winner, who was the only horse to clear it at the first attempt after a pile-up.
- The Canal Turn (fences 8 and 24), where runners turn sharply left on landing.
- The Chair (fence 15), the highest on the course at 5ft 2in, with a ditch in front.
The race has changed in recent years. From 2024 The Jockey Club cut the maximum field from 40 to 34, moved the first fence 60 yards closer to the start, introduced a standing start for races over the National fences and raised the minimum handicap rating to 130.
Grand National 2027: Date, Start Time and the Aintree Festival
The Randox Grand National Festival runs over three days, Thursday 8 to Saturday 10 April 2027. The National itself is on the Saturday, scheduled for 4pm.

The detailed 2027 race card had not been published when this guide was updated. In 2026, Grand National Day also featured the Grade One Maghull Novices’ Chase, won by 50/1 shot Mirabad, the first of a 10,581/1 four-timer for the trainer Dan Skelton that afternoon.
The FA Cup quarter-finals fall the weekend before, on Saturday 3 April, and the Champions League quarter-final first legs are on 6 and 7 April.
