What the Six Nations Is: Rugby’s Great Winter Championship
The Guinness Men’s Six Nations is contested each year by England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales. Each team plays the other five once, with home advantage alternating year to year, so every side has either two or three home matches.
The table works on points. A win is worth four, a draw two. A bonus point goes to any team scoring four or more tries in a match, and to a team that loses by seven points or fewer; a side can collect both. A team that wins all five matches, the Grand Slam, gets three extra points so that it cannot be overtaken. If teams finish level, points difference decides, then tries scored.
Within the Championship sit older prizes with betting markets of their own: the Triple Crown, for a Home Nation (England, Ireland, Scotland or Wales) that beats the other three; the Calcutta Cup between England and Scotland; and the wooden spoon, the unwanted reward for finishing last.

Several fixtures stand out. Ireland open and close at home, against England and then France. England meet France on Valentine’s Day, a Sunday afternoon at Twickenham. The Calcutta Cup comes on the final day. There is a fallow week after round three, and the Cheltenham Festival begins three days after Super Saturday.
